It keep's getting better and just this morning I bemoaned the fact about how much I missed living in Germany and I log onto tumblr and see this gorgeous photo on EFF Yeah Solange's page I had to see more. Some of the international magazines have the best fashion editorials and even magazine covers for that matter because they don't feature celebrities ad nauseam like the American, British and Canadian do. Anyway, Solange Knowles is once again building up her portfolio with one fabulous editorial after another and this time she sizzles in the London Evening Standard's-ES Magazine in a gorgeous editorial.
When it comes to fashion and style, no one fuses together the African aesthetic along with the time-tested classics as does Ghubar Magazine's E-I-C, Sarah Diouf. In the March issue of Ghubar magazine, Sarah captured the beauty of singer Ebony Bones in a graphic display of Ebony's intriguing individuality, eclectic style, and of course her gorgeous Afro. Be sure to follow Ghubar magazine for the best in fashion, style and inspiring interviews and to read the rest of their March issue.
I made it home just in time to catch the last part of the Oscars. Viola didn't win, but she's still a winner in my book, and Octavia Spencer brought home the best-supporting Oscar. Esperanza Spalding did a perfect rendition of Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World." Looking angelic in a one-shouldered white gown with her massive Afro serving as a halo, she dedicated a very memorable song to all of those who have worked in front of and behind the scenes in the entertainment industry who have passed on. I think tonight she even won over more fans to her ever growing fan base who appreciate real music.
Professor Kathleen Cleaver is a well known activist and educator in World Herstory and I'm only using this stunning photo as an example of our beauty and what I'm willing to do to protect it and control the images and identity of the woman of African ancestry.
I'm going to protect it at all costs and I'm going to celebrate our diverse beauty as it is distributed all around the globe. I'm not going to be a cultural imperialist and think of my people from other parts of the African Diaspora as less than and unworthy of emulation and reverence. Those of you who feel you can't relate to your family from another part of the Diaspora choose not to because you simply don't want to.
Most of us are still in search of an identity that was basically denied to us here in A-M-E-R-I-C-A...one that is simply regulated by and to some psychologically validated by that of the dominant culture. Many of you are now rediscovering the beauty and rich culture that truly is ours. MAMA AFRIKA'S progeny is beautiful in every aspect of the word and if you can't see it, it's only because you're either blinded by self-hatred or hate all together!
It's sad that even in this century there are still people of AFRICAN ancestry who are embarrassed and still opposed to anything that reminds them of their African ancestry. There are a lot of great things that I have seen in my years on this earth and I hope before I die that I'm able to see the pride in which our people exhibit by showing pride of their origins.
While everyone is reporting on the borrowed gowns of last night's Grammy Awards, I stick to the real trendsetters who get me excited about fashion. Those who bring something special and unique and Solange Knowles is that special someone for me.
You can't go soft even in DVF prints like this...I'm smitten!
I'm not one to ignore the diverse beauty that composes the women who belong to the African Diaspora , especially my people in Brazil by thinking that I can't relate to them because of our so called language barriers and customs. I see the beauty in everything around me and I don't believe in negating my people. As unique as we all are one look just doesn't define our diverse and culturally rich beauty. Graziele is a favorite model of mine who is known for her beautiful Afro and she is also one whom I've also noticed on other blogs as well since I first wrote about her.
The Staple Singers would have you thinking hard, dancing hard and even praising hard all at the same time. You just don't find great music like that anymore that can do all three things.
I wondered when NOLA.com would do a story about the Guinness World record holder of the worlds largest Afro, Miss Aevin Dugas and it seems that they finally did. Love the photos and now bloggers everywhere have new ones to see. Congrats to Aevin!
I can't believe my October issue ESSENCE Magazine arrived earlier than usual. Not only is the cover of Mrs. Obama beautiful, but the editorial featuring Tika Sumpter, Rutina Wesley and Naturi Naughton in a Super Fly editorial is fantabulous! The editorial was shot by Tim Peterson and styled by the uber stylish Agnes Cammock.
I think this is The NYT's /T-Magazine best issue ever because it's featuring some of my favorite women: Solange Knowles, Les Nubians, and Corinne Bailey Rae in a stunning, yet simple fashion editorial. They even highlight the fashionable lifestyle of the super stylish Erica Reid in this issue. Woo hoo! Having my subscription is so worth the money.
**I originally wrote this in February and now I'm re-posting it again because Patina's star is on the rise. From what I heard come from Whoopi and Aretha Franklin is that she just may be in Aretha's biopic. Everyone slept on Tika Sumpter and now she's on everyone's radar.
If I find them, you'll read about them here, plus I love to spread the word about those who are traveling under everyone else's radar while the rest are so caught up on the top five females of the entertainment field. I present to you actress Patina Miller. Patina Miller plays Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi's movie character) in the new Broadway version of Sister Act the Musical which hits Broadway on March /24/11.

Talented, beautiful and accomplished! I can't wait to see what the future holds for this young woman and hopefully talent will out rule name recognition because she is definitely one to watch.

I guess when we seek someone or something we'll always find what we're looking for and everyday that I find 'them' I will post something about the women who work behind the seams, the scenes and in the boardrooms of many of the worlds global brands who many of you don't often hear about nor read about. ~Divalocity

In the late '60s and '70s, only a few Afros were as powerful and majestic as singer, model and actress, Marsha Hunt's. The Philadelphia-born beauty made a bigger name for herself in London, when she began starring in the British production of the ground breaking musical "Hair," instantly becoming the toast of London. Hunt's beauty was so stunning, it left Mick Jagger smitten enough to fall in love with her and write, "Brown Sugar."
From the pages of VOGUE UK.
After a decade of modeling, acting, and singing, Marsha Hunt became a writer, releasing novels and memoirs, including "Repossessing Ernestine: A Granddaughter Uncovers the Secret History of Her American Family," a recount of her search for her father's mother, a free woman of color who was mysteriously banished to an asylum for 50 years. In 2004, Marsha Hunt was diagnosed with breast cancer, and after a complete mastectomy, she celebrated her survival by recreating her 1969 cover pose for British Vogue on the cover of her book titled, "Undefeated."
Some only remember Hunt for posing nude for the cover of British Vogue's January 1969 issue (below), she was much more than that iconic cover which eventually introduced her to a whole new legion of admiring fans, Marsha held Europe in the palm of her hand. Today, Marsha Hunt still calls London home, along with she and Mick Jagger's daughter, Karis where she still holds London in the Palm of her hands and she's still a beauty icon.
