SOLO STAR: SOLANGE KNOWLES FOR ELLE SOUTH AFRICA

ELLE ZA
Almost every blog that I follow had readers who were filled with excitement when they found out that Solange Knowles would be on the cover of the November 2012 issue of ELLE South Africa. We waited and we watched for any news we could find on this epic feat until the day the magazine would come out. Solange may not be a bigger star like her sister Beyonce, but she has proven that she's her own woman and that's why we love her style and her sense of individuality.

Solange has had her fair share of magazine covers and editorials and each and every one of them was equally  stunning , but this is ELLE Magazine and it doesn't matter if it's the South African version or not.

I can't believe that she hasn't graced the covers of any major American magazines, including Essence and Ebony with her growing popularity and fan base especially since they seem to go by those requirements when they consider cover subjects for their magazine covers. Oh well, it is what it is.

With Solange being the cover and editorial subject, she introduced an even bigger audience to several South African designers with these printastic looks.

So far the November magazines are celebrating some diversity on their covers: Halle Berry is on the cover of InStyle and Naomi Campbell is on the Cover of Harper's Bazaar Russia, Naomie Harris is on the cover of InStyle UK, Hunger Magazine and the October issue of G.Q. Turkey.

Le Look Du Jour: Oprah Winfrey's Stunning November Cover of O the Oprah Magazine

Oprah Winfrey does it again by wearing her hair in another beautiful Afro inspired hairdo on the November issue of O the Oprah Magazine. Photographer Ruven Afanador captured Oprah in a stunning red dress from Alexander McQueen, with just the right touch of gold colored accessories and those banging red "killer heels" from Nicholas Kirkwood.

After reading the positive responses from many of her readers, Oprah seems to have inspired some of her readers to embrace their hair in it's natural state. In this issue, Miss Winfrey sits down for one-on-one interviews with both presidential candidates, President and Mrs. Obama and Mr. and Mrs. Mitt Romney to bring readers an intimate look at both sides of the election.

Media Mogul Oprah Winfrey Goes Au Naturel For The September Issue of O The Oprah Magazine

Oprah sports her massive Afro on the cover of O The Oprah Magazine's September issue

“They say a little change never hurt anybody. In fact, I believe that’s an understatement: I’ve found that a little change make a world of difference, and I’m always amazed by how easy it is to brighten things up with a little tweak. (Like, say, wearing your hair au naturel, as I did on this month’s cover.) ~Oprah Winfrey .

Once I saw the cover I smiled from ear to ear. As a woman who has been au naturel for four decades it's refreshing to see more and more women embrace their natural hair texture and wear it with confidence. Sure, some of you will say it's so superficial, but I deal in the superficial and I also "deal-n-truth" on my own terms.

A lot of women look up to celebrities for inspiration and for some kind of validation in the choices that they make when it comes to their appearance, sorry, but that's not my thing. If I like your style, I like your style and I will always have my own personal style and not copy anyone else's.

I've read several blogs dedicated to natural hair who confirm this statement when some write that they'd like to see more prominent women wear their hair in it's natural state in hopes that it would be more acceptable for them to wear a natural hairstyle with confidence and be readily accepted from their peers and co-workers. The problem doesn't lie with your peers or co-workers, the problem is basically an individual problem that goes much deeper than that.

The real problem is that the psychological damage that so many women suffer from will not change a thing until they learn to embrace what they were born with before they look to a society who they think will accept them. The problem actually lies within before another human being will accept you and no one will accept you until you accept yourselves. Stop looking for external forces to accept you and begin to accept yourselves just the way you are. I don't base my life on what other people think of me and women just don't understand how freeing it is to be free from the opinions of others.

Oprah looks beautiful either way she chooses to wear her hair. Rock On Oprah!

A Moment In Afro Her-story: Author Ramona (Sapphire) Lofton

Author Sapphire

The author, Sapphire was born Ramona Lofton in Fort Ord, California to a military family. She attended City College of New York and obtained her master's degree at Brooklyn College. Sapphire held various jobs before starting her writing career, working as a performance artist, a social worker, and a teacher of reading and writing.

Sapphire, as all of us know her as-is the author of the critically acclaimed novel, Push which was later rewritten as a screenplay for the movie- Precious by screen writer, Geoffrey Fletcher. Sapphire self-published the collection of poems Meditations on the Rainbow in 1987 and in 1994 book of poems, titled American Dreams.

Push was a book that "pushed" buttons most people don't want to see or would rather ignore as if they don't exist. The reality is they do exist in the lives of countless men, women and children who lives have been touched by mans inhumanity to another. The movie, Precious caused a rift with those who want to hold on to lies and be imprisoned by them instead of confronting the truth head on.

Tonight actress MoNique won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of one of the character's from the book, Mary. Screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher, also won an Oscar for Screenwriting.

I apologize deeply for being lazy and not writing my post on this prolific author who definitely deserves the honor.  Congratulations Sapphire!

A Moment In Afro Her-story: Media Mogul Oprah Winfrey

"Media Mogul Oprah Winfrey"

First of all, what can I say about this woman that the world doesn't already know? One of the most iconic and influential women on the planet, media mogul, philanthropist and icon- Oprah Winfrey! I don't care what her haters call her because she is no "Mammy" and I think her haters need to redefine what that word means when they attempt to denigrate her and our women ancestors, even though bonded by the shackles of slavery built this nation and the nations throughout the world!

Those same "Mammy's" built this great nation as we know of today! Through their resilience and perseverance is what brought our people through the misery and dehumanization of Slavery from here to South and Central America and to the Caribbean, the strength of the African woman is what has allowed us to survive and thrive in societies which attempted to deny us our humanity. On her back- even to this very day she carries our futures which is still the bridge to our prosperity as a people.

Oprah raised the bar and is still the torch bearer of how we can define success for ourselves. She taught us to explore the world and make connections with those who can also inspire and enlighten our reach. Oprah Winfrey is now the owner of her very OWN Network- I love those initials and it's something we all should aspire to- to own everything about ourselves- our images- our identities and our own businesses.

When you let your differences limit your possibilities, you will also live a life based on your own limitations and those of what others have told you. I believe that support is life's greatest strength. That's why I proudly support those who give so much of themselves to make a difference in the lives of others and Oprah Winfrey is such an individual.
