A Woman You Should Know: Brazilian Poet Elisa Lucinda

The cover of her number one bestseller: Parem de Falar Mal da Rotina (Stop Talking Little Routine)

"Education, coupled with the desire, generates the possibilities." Our revolution is only educational. Education is going to change everything." ~Elisa Lucinda

On this blog I do my best to highlight the women of the African Diaspora who live throughout the world that many of you may not see in magazines and in other blogs unless you speak the language. My father always taught us that no matter where we (people of African descent) lived in the world, we are still family in the truest sense connected by our shared heritage. And I personally believe that language and culture should no be the determining factor as to how and why we interact with each other. With this said I now present to you well known Brazilian poet, actress and activist, Elisa Lucinda.

Elisa Lucinda Gomes dos Campos, is a poet, journalist, singer and actress in Brazil who uses her position to raise awareness to the disparities in educational opportunities in her native Brazil. Elisa knows that words are powerful, so powerful that she learned to master and utilize the full potential of this tool which became the raw material of many of her poems, essays, dramas, and also an efficient instrument of seduction. Elisa works tirelessly to ensure that all Brazilians, especially the children who live in the favelas are included in the transformation of society through education and awareness. Elisa conducts poetry writing workshops at her Escola Lucinda de Poesia Viva.

VOGUE BRASILS ALL BLACK ISSUE

 Luana de Noailles

Paco Rabanne Favorite and Former Brasilian Fashion Model, Countess Luana de Noailles

Not wanting to be outdone by VOGUE ITALIA.  VOGUE BRASIL published their own all-black issue featuring Brasilian models of African descent. I love the photos, but it left me wondering was it needed since Brasil has such a large Afro-Brasilian population (2nd largest outside Africa) or that it's now time that they show their true diversity to the world on a regular basis instead of at Carnival time? Whatever it is, it's a first step in propelling the country forward inclusion and economic prosperity for all of it's inhabitants. I'm not reading about it nor am I hearing the same excitement the VOGUE Italia "All Black Issue" garnered a few years ago. The hoopla concerning that issue was like the world was about to come to an end or something which gives me one of those 'hmm' moments.I'm going to buy this issue so I can see the entire magazine, because of what I've seen of it so far consists only of the most pertinent models of today and not the history makers who I'm showing above and below.

Afrolista of the Week: Adyel Silva

"Brazilian Songstress-Adyel Silva

This weeks Afrolista is Brazilian singer Adyel Silva. I love all kinds of music and the only music that really matters is good music regardless of what language it's sung in.

I was completely blown away when I first heard her sing because she reminds me so much of Jazz songstress, Carmen McRae in her delivery even though it's in Portuguese.

Adyel seduces her listeners with the musical offerings of Bossa Nova, smooth and electrifying Jazz and the rhythmic sounds of Afro-beat. To learn more about Adyel Silva, click here to her MySpace page.
